Celebrate LHS Staff!

Posted by on Jan 22, 2016 in Parent Press | Comments Off on Celebrate LHS Staff!

Here at Leadership, we are proud of our committed teachers and staff and hope you are, too. SFUSD has a new program to publicly celebrate those who are doing excellent work called RAVE (Recognizing All Valuable Employees), which you can read about here:  http://www.sfexaminer.com/the-people-behind-the-schools/

If you know a Leadership teached or staff member who deserves a little shout out, it’s easy to do. It will take you only five minutes and you’ll be bringing some sunshine to a special person who brings love to our city’s children and the adults who serve them every day.

To nominate someone, please go to sfusd.edu/rave

Thank you!

Week Without Walls 2016!

Posted by on Jan 20, 2016 in Parent Press | Comments Off on Week Without Walls 2016!

Week Without Walls is coming soon! It’s the week of March 21st, right before Spring Break. We are so excited about the wonderful courses that are being offered this year, including College Visits, Surfing, Bay Area Culture, Camping, and Mural Painting.
Please remember that attendance is mandatory for all students. If you are able to support this program with a donation of $5 to $500, we would be very grateful, as the cost to the school is significant and we want to continue to be able to offer great enrichments like this to all of our students every year. You can make a donation by bringing a check to the main office or donating online: https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/lhsgift/donate Your donation is tax-deductible.
And if you have any questions about Week Without Walls, please reach out to your child’s Advisor. Thank you for your support of this special Leadership tradition!

Happy New Year!

Leadership would like to wish a happy and healthy New Year to our wonderful parent community. You are an essential part of our school and we are humbled by your infinite support and generosity.  Here’s to another year of growth and achievement in 2016!

Application Deadline

The deadline to apply to Leadership for the 2016-2017 school year is January 15. Parents can apply online at http://www.leadershiphigh.org/how-to-enroll/apply-online/

Senior Portfolio Day

Seniors have been preparing for their last portfolio defense since freshman year.  They have compiled years of work from different grades and classes to demonstrate their growth in our four School Wide Outcomes: Personal Responsibility, Social Responsibility, Critical Thinking, and Communication. Seniors will defend one SWO of their choice and one chosen by the audience. They will be graded on their presentation skills and the thoroughness of their defense. Completing and passing the Senior Portfolio is a huge milestone at LHS. Good luck Seniors!

Week Without Walls

Week Without Walls, a Leadership tradition, is right around the corner! For new families, WWW is a week-long elective course in which a student has the opportunity to learn more about a topic of their choice. Previous WWW sessions have included Swimming & Surfing, Girls’ Camping, Hiking, Soccer Camp, College Tours, and many more! WWW is mandatory for all students.  At the WWW fair on January 11, students can learn about all of the courses that will be offered this year. They then submit their top three choices, from which we use to create the classes. We do our best to accommodate everyone’s requests. Depending on their assignment your student may be able to earn Physical Education or Leadership credits. Parents will receive any necessary information regarding field trips and permission slips ahead of time. WWW is March 21- 25, the week before Spring Break.

Snap For The City – New SESSION!

This semester, Mr. Seaty is bringing his passion for photography to SESSIONS. He successfully completed a Go Fund Me campaign, raising enough money to purchase 7 DSLR camera and additional equipment. Read the statement below for the full course description:

Snap for the City’s (SFC) curriculum will focus on engaging with and photographing community based organizations, parks, and local businesses in order to create a visual essay of San Francisco. Students will ultimately use photography to answer the question, “What is community to you?” Equipped with DSLR cameras and an array of lenses, students will learn how to use the various functions of cameras to craft their final product. In addition to photographing, students will explore the purpose and effect of lighting, and how to create custom filters by adjusting lighting through digital editing software.

Much like one paragraph does not support a thesis, one photo in isolation does not tell a story. Thus, the course’s final will culminate with a Spring 2016 gallery in which you will select 10-15 prints to have developed and a full feature photobook displayed for family, friends, and community members to view.

Center for Youth Wellness Study

Students from the H2O advisory have been collaborating with the Center for Youth Wellness (CYW) to conduct a study on how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) affect academic performance among San Francisco youth.  It is very exciting the LHS community of youth will be part of this study. It is groundbreaking research, led by the CYW and Dr. Nadine Burke, so our participation is vital to the health of our community. The ACEs survey that our youth are participating in will be the first research starting with teens, rather than adults reflecting on past experience.  Click the link below for more information about the connection between childhood experiences and behaviors affect health outcomes in later life.

Free/Reduced Lunch Applications
We have approximately 20 families who have not submitted their free/reduced lunch application. This form is not only critical for ensuring that your student has access to meals at school, but also because it greatly affects the funding that Leadership gets from the State of California. This makes it that much more important that we receive a form for each student, regardless of whether they qualify for free/reduced lunch or eat in the cafeteria.
Notices have been mailed home to all families without applications. We have also spoken with each student individually. If you need a paper application, please come by our office. If you’d prefer to apply online, you can do so at https://schoolmealapp.sfusd.edu/
Help us reach 100% so our students can get the funding they deserve!
